First Day on the Job Checklist
- July 12, 2022
The first day on the job for a new employee doesn’t need to be stressful. It’s a great time to meet new people, become familiar with a new environment, and enjoy starting the next chapter of your career. There will be lots of relatively straight forward onboarding tasks and items to learn, but this doesn’t mean sitting back. Instead, it’s a chance to set the tone for the future success of your career.
Below, we created a checklist in order to have a successful first day.
A Solid Plan for Your First Day on the Job
Taking a few minutes to draft a plan the day before will go a long way. Map out the commute time and be cognizant that the route may take longer during morning traffic. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early, but don’t enter the building until shortly before it’s time.
Set out the proper attire the night before to avoid any hassle the next morning. If necessary, reach out to someone in the company to see what’s appropriate. If still unsure, siding with professional formal is always a safe bet.
Finally, make sure to have any mobile devices or electronics charged and set up properly. If there’s software that is needed for your first day on the job, it’s important to already have it installed.
If your first day will be remote, prepare a clean space for any video meetings. Be aware of what is directly behind you in the camera and make sure to ask anyone else in the household for silence during expected meeting times.
Banking Information
If you don’t have a mobile platform that gives ready access to banking information, make sure to bring it. Onboarding typically involves registering within the payroll system, so account and routing numbers are necessary.
In addition, if there are forms to review before arriving make sure to complete them. Coming prepared for onboarding makes the process go smoother and easier.
