Onboarding is a critical process for any organization, and when it comes to onboarding SAP professionals, it requires a specialized approach due to the complexity and technicality of their roles. No matter what area of SAP the professional specializes in, effective onboarding strategies can help them integrate smoothly into the organization and ensure they are aligned with expectations. 1. Preparation

Before an SAP professional officially starts onboarding for their new position, it’s essential to communicate all necessary information regarding the role and its requirements, including the team they will be working with and the projects they will be handling. It’s also helpful to provide an overview of the company’s SAP environment so they can best prepare mentally and technically. 

On the back end, organizations must ensure that all administrative tasks are completed before the professional’s start date. This includes setting up their workspace (if they are working in person), arranging necessary hardware and software, creating user accounts, and providing access to relevant systems and documentation. After all, a smooth setup helps the new hire to start their work without any delays. 

Note: For those working in a remote or hybrid setting, remember to plan out a virtual onboarding strategy. This includes online training modules and virtual collaboration platforms so that the new hire receives a comprehensive experience, regardless of location. 

 

2. Orientation

On their first day, introduce the new professional to the company’s mission, vision, values, and culture. The introduction should include information about the organizational structure as well, highlighting key departments and leadership. This can help them understand the broader context of their work and how it contributes to the company (and its goals). 

In addition to introducing the broader company, orientation should provide an in-depth overview of the company’s SAP landscape, including the modules that are currently in use, customizations, and any past, ongoing, or upcoming projects, along with governance and change management procedures. This is an especially important step that should not be overlooked when onboarding SAP professionals.
